Liberate This!

Eric Alterman was a bit too quick to say he was wrong in his comments regarding the Iraqi people welcoming the American “liberators”. Yes, clearly wrong, but not in assessment, but in quick retreat. Iraqis, who are predictably happy to see Saddam go, “surprisingly” seem no more pleased with Americans than they were with Saddam, reports the Associated Press.

Let us get something straight – our president and his cronies have made criminals out of our soldiers by authorizing this war. There is and will not be any legal justification for the unprovoked attack, and if anything, the quickness of the fall of Saddam’s regime proves clearly what the peace movement has been saying all along: Saddam was no threat to the United States, which in turn proves the illegality of this war under international law.

There is a lot to be said about the idiotic support of American troops regardless of why or where they are deployed. I do not support this war, nor do I support American soldiers who accept illegal orders to murder innocent people in an illegal attack anymore than I accept the routine Israeli murder of civilians in the name of ‘security’. American soldiers are committing crimes against humanity in Iraq, and there can be no excuse. There is also little excuse for the muzzle that’s been placed on dissent on this country – since when is shooting protestors a way of democracy?

Unfortunately the United States is not a party to the International Criminal Court, which is too bad as there is a rather big crowd who would love to see the unelected Bush in handcuffs and charged with crimes against humanity, as he ought to be.

IDF, by the way, has in the past few weeks shot two more foreign activists, with no justification or explanation. They are yet to explain the murder of Rachel Corrie, but don’t hold your breath on that one.
