“A Scandal Worse Than Watergate…”

“The public was told that Saddam posed an imminent threat. If that claim was fraudulent, the selling of the war is arguably the worst scandal in American political history — worse than Watergate, worse than Iran-contra.”
It all sounds almost like something one would read in an ultra-liberal publication like The Nation or The Progressive… but yet these are the words published on the pages of the New York Times.

We’ve seen Kenneth Lay and his buddies in handcuffs, and although any of them are yet to be convicted and jailed, the lies are out of the bag. And one need not think far to remember the cat that jumped out of the bag when we suddenly realized that our priests were mostly nothing more than criminal hypocrites not able to keep their dirty hands off the kids they were ignorantly charged with ‘saving’. Maybe, just maybe we’re at the edge of the biggest scandal of them all, one that may just be large enough to put our country on a new direction.
It is the scandal of ‘we told you so’. Millions of people took to the streets on February 15th and afterwards. Millions. But the unelected moron and his corporate cronies did not listen, and we had no choice but to let them be proven wrong in action. And for a bit, it seemed like they were almost right — but now, months after the war has ended, it is painfully clear that this war has been for nothing. Thousands of iraqis killed, a country destroyed, hundreds of american lives lost.
For what? Surely not for weapons of mass destruction. Oil, perhaps. But not WMDs. And without the WMDs, this war was, like the world peace movement said, illegal and wrong. And maybe, just maybe, the day will come when Bush and his cronies will be not in the oval office, but in the Hague, in handcuffs, answering to charges of crimes against humanity which they have committed.
Maybe, just maybe, a new direction for our country and our small planet will be the outcome of this sorry mess. The wind is changing, and there is hope.
if america sucks so much, why don’t you leave?
You are missing the point my friend — it is one small planet. There is nowhere to go, and that is exactly what the peace movement was saying from the getgo.
