Trip to Palestine
Posted by davidzon | Posted in General | Posted on 10-08-2003
I haven’t been posting because since July 15th I have been working in Palestine with the International Solidarity Movement, the same group for which Rachel Corrie was working when she was murdered by the Israeli bulldozer.
This posting is the first of several updates I have sent out since coming here. Read the rest of the post for more.
I know who I am, and that is why I am here. I came here to help create peace, and I still am here to create peace.
I know who I am, and that is why I am here. I came here to help create peace, and I still am here to create peace. Start thinking why and how. (in response to email). If anyone gets this emailwho wants to not receive future emails, please let me know as well.
I am in Jerusalem right now. I totally don’t understand what the fuss is all about — the wall that the religious folks pray at is like the wall of North Farmington High – very small. It is also divided into two sections, one for men another for women. Religious bastard idiots actually believe that its holy. Wow. And the jews w/ boxes on their heads get real interesting — although I can’t wait to have to deal with the settlers, ick.
It is very militarized — tons of army. Army, heh. Kids! Sixteen or seventeen year old girls w/ guns. Checkpoints all over the place, I get asked for passport every time I enter any jewish areas (old jerusalem is divided into christian, muslem, armenian, jewish and other areas).
Interesting thing is that the armenians also have apparently had their own holocaust, or something like it. There was a bunch of fliers and stuff in the armenian section.
The country overall is a lot like California. Palm trees, and it is warm. The people are fairly friendly, both Israeli (although their child soldiers can be a royal pain in the ass with their annoying questioning, and very very arbitrary like checking the passports of two british guys but not mine or the reverse on the next checkpoint) and Palestinians are also very very very friendly — believe it or not, they really do live in peace here for the most part.
It is truly a police state here. The economy of Israel is in the trash literally, they apparently reissued money because the inflation got so ridiculously bad, but things can be quite a tad expensive. Its no wonder — their military spending is only probably beat by the spending on the settlements. And of course the religious orthodox don’t get to serve. Ick.
It’s a good way to brainwash a population a certain way — dump them all into the army. Can’t help but wonder if the brainwashing is even worse on this side than on the Palestinian side. The same age kids that sit in 11th-12th grade in Detroit are here in the army — same age. Good time to brainwash them to see things a certain way.
Anyway enough ranting. I will be back online in a few days. Will have cell phone by then.
