A Scary Hint of What May Come

After spending several hours reading the report by the Project for a New American Century, “Rebuilding America’s Defenses” I was struck by several curious tidbits that sound all too scary. The PNAC team includes folks like Richard Perle, Dick Cheney, and other right-wing lunatics, with a focus literally on world domination, that now happen to be running our country. Given the source, it may be wise to start paying attention to their mad ramblings as they now constitute our immediate reality.

For those not aware of the report, this is an infamous paper published in September 2000 which calls for a number of changes including a 3.8% GDP defense budget, star wars, and a full modernization of the military. It also has a tidbit stating that such a modernization would be a very long process, unless aided by a “pearl harbor”-like event to speed things along. They got their budget, star wars, and the World Trade Center to justify it, alright.

However in addition to the famous Pearl Harbor quote, several small blurbs caught my eye. One was concerning weaponry which can target specific things within the DNA structure. Essentially coupled with a drastic focus on China, it seems that the report is hinting at biological weaponry that can wipe out a specific race, such as for example, the Chinese.

Found on page 60 of the report, the eerie note states that “Advanced forms of biological warfare that can “target” specific genotypes may transform biological warfare from the realm of terror to a politically useful tool.” Taken together with the focus of the report on threats from very specific races, such as those found in East Asia, this has some very scary potential.

The report also speaks of a need for the forces to be given “greater bureaucratic and legal standing” which clearly has a very Orwellian ring to it. While this is not explained in any great depth and the writer rushes on to speak about allowing for competition between the different military branches, the developments since September 11th seem to speak for themselves. Shadow governments, great emergency powers for FEMA and other emergency management agencies, and ultimately the almost secret powers over the military surely seem to be growing, if not necessarily being used or abused.

The last curious bit was about the need for America’s military to dominate and control cyberspace. It is interesting that this part is only a short, tiny blurb in the overall report, probably reflecting the writers’ lack of any serious understanding of what the term “cyberspace” really implies.

At this pivotal time I thought it might be useful to comment that in the text of your article, "A Scary Hint of What May Come," 11/04/03, the publishing date of PNAC’s report is misstated as September 2002. Isn’t it imperative that the public knows and understand that it was actually published 9-2000?

    Kind regrds,
