The true price of democracy
Ugh. From AlJazeera:
“Rashid Hamid Wali, an Aljazeera television worker, was killed early Friday morning while filming clashes in the flashpoint Iraqi city of Karbala. “He looked up to try to locate the place of the US military vehicles, but he was shot in the head by machine guns,” said Muhammad.
He died instantly. There was a power cut followed by a heavy exchange of fire as US vehicles rumbled by, he said. “We could not confirm the source of the fire but it was directly pointed at us,” said Muhammad. Another nine civilians were killed in the fighting”.
Bushism/Fascism and its discontents…
First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out–
because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out–
because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out–
because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out–
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me–
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
All there is to be said…
“To our friends in Rafah,
We cannot stand, as Rachel stood, between your homes and families and the IDF bulldozers and tanks. But we have stood with friends on the streets of your sister city, Olympia, and we have called our Congress and our State Department to demand this atrocity stop. Please know that we hear your cries for help, that we are adding our voices to yours in demanding of our government and the government of Israel peace, justice, security, dignity and hope for the people of Rafah. Our hearts are with you.
Craig and Cindy Corrie”
Asscroft loses lawsuit against Greenpeace protestors.
Score: One for dissent. Zero (?) for fascism.
Woo. Go Greenpeace!
From msnbc:
MIAMI – A judge threw out federal charges Wednesday against Greenpeace for a protest in which members of the environmental group clambered aboard a cargo ship loaded with Amazon mahogany.
Greenpeace was charged under an 1872 law — not used in more than a century — that was intended to keep bawdy houses from luring sailors off ships with offers of prostitutes, strong drink and warm beds.
Insightful….
“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.”
– Dwight David Eisenhower, April 16, 1953

And so it continues…
I spent a couple of amazing weeks on the road with the Wheels of Justice Bus.
It was really wonderful to get out into the country and really get to talk with people who are being affected by the insane policies of our government. I’ve spoken at both private and public universities, public schools, religious halls, and was a part of a number of vigils.
Everywhere we went, one thing remained constant. There is a groundswell of opposition and frustration brewing at our suicidal policies. People are angry, justifiably so. As the body bags start coming home, the media (or lack thereof) is being overriden by the sad reality of the war coming home.
The reason this blog has been silent lately is because I am at a crossroads. This site has been focusing on all the negative stuff — a reflection of where the movement as a whole has been going, rather than being pro-active in light of the most brutal of oppressions. Stay tuned for some changes coming ![]()

Just Another Western Country
Up to this point, most of my experiences with Israelis have been somewhat similar to those of the Palestinians: the only Israelis I’ve met have been in uniform yelling, shooting, throwing sound grenades, committing human rights violations and war crimes. So I guess it was time for me to wander off to the other side of the fence, to see the civilian side of the society.

Ethnic Cleansing in Progress…
I have made my home on the road in Budrus, a quiet, almost sleepy town whose only fault has been to exist very near the border of the Green Line. The Israelis got real creative here, and have placed a training firing range right near the town, so there is gunshots being heard almost around the clock. What a way to terrorize a town.
State Terror and Such Things
So it is that time yet again. I hopped onto a plane to London and then took another shuttle out to Tel Aviv. I had no trouble getting through the customs. I suppose I fit the racist criteria of blonde hair, blue eyes… or in this case it was because I am Jewish with distant family in Israel, and as I really do not fit the profile of an activist (or terrortourist as they seem to now call us, although I much more prefer the more precise term “peacemaker” that the border patrol labeled me in Nablus last time around.)
Ever true to building the worst Presidential record in history…
The unelected President Bush today submitted a $2.4 trillion budget to Congress… “To battle the soaring deficits, Bush proposed squeezing scores of government programs and sought outright spending cuts in seven of 15 Cabinet-level agencies. The Agriculture Department and the Environmental Protection Agency were targeted for the biggest reductions.”
EPA getting cut, while Department of Defense grows. Go figure eh? All this while the rate of asthma and cancers is going up… Right.
